Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church, and particularly a member of Assumption Parish, is warmly welcomed. As a parish family, we seek to be a welcoming community of faith, with our doors open to all who genuinely seek the Lord, desire to live the Gospel and are willing to accept the discipline and faith of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program is for individuals, whether adult, youth or child, who desire to know more about the Catholic faith. Individuals can include those who are non-baptized or baptized members of another denomination or those who were baptized as Catholic but never instructed in the faith. Age-appropriate programs are arranged depending on the individual needs of the adult, youth or child.
Beginning in late summer, informal inquiry sessions are held prior to the RCIA program beginning in September. Continuing through the following year up to Lent, Easter and Pentecost, the RCIA is a program of education and faith formation in the teachings, practices and prayers of the Catholic faith. RCIA sessions are held on one evening a week at 7 p.m. in the Church lower level.
Those in the RCIA program also are presented to the parish at various ceremonies that occur during Sunday liturgies, marking stages of growth. Attendance at a weekend retreat or Parish Mission week is encouraged, at which time candidates discern their decision to pursue initiation. On Holy Saturday, the eve of Easter, those seeking to join the Church are welcomed and celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. Persons validly baptized in another Christian Church are not re-baptized but make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church. New Catholics at the Easter Vigil are usually confirmed and receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time with their new parish family. A period of instruction in living the faith continues for several weeks after Easter.
