July Registration Update:

Welcome New Families!

If you would like to register your children for Assumption PSR, please contact Mrs. Donna Koppy at 314-487-6520 ext. 2219 or koppyd@assumptionstl.org.  We will be responding to your requests for registration when the Assumption Parish Religion Office reopens Monday, August 2, 2010.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Important News for Everyone . . .

Please be aware that the Religion Office is closed annually in July and will reopen Monday, August 2, 2010.  We will respond to your voicemails and emails at that time in the order we received them.

We hope that everyone is having a nice summer, and we are looking forward to a new year of PSR!

Mark your calendars!  The first night of PSR will be Monday, September 13th, 2010—6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Returning Families  . . .

If you received the PSR registration confirmation email (see below if you did not):

Thank you to those families who completed step 1 of the Assumption PSR registration process.

This means that you will receive a packet via U.S. mail in July for each student.  All that will be necessary to complete this second and final step of the registration process will be:

  • to verify the already completed emergency information form and sign it
  • read and sign the Christian Witness Statement and Media Permission Forms
  • enclose a PSR tuition payment

Complete instructions will be provided in the packet.   This final step is necessary because the State of Missouri and the Archdiocese of St. Louis requires a physically signed emergency information form (electronic signatures are not permitted for this purpose by state law).  These original forms must be signed and returned along with your PSR tuition payment no later than Monday August 2, 2010.  Forms may be returned via U.S. postal mail or dropped off at the Assumption Religion Office (which is located in the Assumption School building).  It is important that we received this packet by August 2nd in order to guarantee your child’s class placement.

Mail packets to:

Assumption Parish School of Religion
4709 Mattis Road
St. Louis, MO 63128

If a registration confirmation email was not received:

It is our mission to provide a strong religious education and formation experience for all children in our care, and in doing so we are required to follow the laws of the State of Missouri and the policies of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, requiring us to verify contact information every year.   If we do not receive this verified information as soon as possible, we will not be able to legally enroll your child into the Assumption PSR program.

If a confirmation email was not received, it could be for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Assumption PSR did not receive a reponse by June 30, 2010 to the PSR registration emails sent 5/13/2010.
  • An incomplete registration was returned (for example, only replying to one of the two registration emails, or leaving out information required by the State of Missouri and the Archdiocese of St. Louis).
  • Assumption PSR did not receive a response to a request for missing information.

If you have not received a confirmation email and would like to register your child for the PSR 2010-2011, please help us expedite the registration process by the following:

  • If you have not replied to both the student and guardian registration emails, please respond to them as soon as possible.  You will receive a response in the order in which requests are received in August.
  • If you replied to both the student and guardian registration emails, please double-check that you completed all required items (such as emergency contact phone numbers) and if you did not, please complete and resend the regsitration forms as soon as possible.
  • If you have received a request for missing information (please check both email and voicemail), please respond as soon as possible.
Thank you.

Assumption PSR Email Now Working

The email problem has been corrected.

Please be aware that due to circumstances outside our control, Assumption PSR was not able to send or receive email from Thursday, June 10, 2010, until Monday, June 14, 2010.  We have been told that the email problem has been corrected.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

We have every reason to believe that we have since received all incoming emails from this period.

All families whose registration emails we have received by June 30, 2010, will receive a confirmation email to that effect.

Mr. Schoen

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please be aware that due to circumstances outside our control, Assumption PSR has not been able to send or receive email since Thursday, June 10, 2010.  We are hopeful that this problem will be corrected soon, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  When email is working again, notice will be posted here on the PSR web page.

PSR Registration 2010-2011 (and Together We're Better).

From Mr. Schoen:

PSR registration for 2010-2011 is here!  Returning PSR families should have received the registration emails, both of which contain complete information and instructions.  Thank you to all parents who verified and updated their email as requested this spring!

If your family is new to Assumption PSR, please email the PSR Administrative Assistant Mr. Matt Schoen at:

. . . with the following information:

1.  The first and last names of the children you wish register.
2.  The first and last name of the parents (or legal guardians).
3.  The first and last names of up to four emergency contacts and the relationships to the children.  For example, John Smith--grandparent.
4.  You may also contact or leave a voicemail for Mr. Schoen at 314-487-6520 ext. 2212.  In your voicemail, please include an email address where the registration emails can be sent.

If you are a returning family and did not receive the registration emails, it may be for one of two reasons:

1.  An email address was not provided by the parents on the 2009-2010 registration form and we did not receive an email address from the parents this spring when requested.

OR

2.  The email address provided by the parents on the 2009-2010 registration form is not current and we did not receive an updated email address from the parents this spring when requested.

I will be contacting parents from whom we do not have a valid email address.  If you did not receive the registration emails and you know we require an up-to-date email address, please feel free to email me this information.

Also, Assumption Parish will be launching a new tuition assistance test program called Assumption Benefits Catholic Education with Together We're Better, and PSR is participating.  If you are interested in this program, you can download the information here:

Together We're Better (ABC TWB)

We are looking forward to a new year of PSR!

Mr. Schoen

Congratulations

Congratulations to our second graders on receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and congratulations to our eighth graders on receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation!

Also, Mrs. Koppy requests that if any parents have any digital photos of First Communion and Confirmation they would like to share publicly, please email them to:

First Communion Reminders

April 26, 2010

First Communion Day is almost here.  It is a delight to see the big smiles on the children’s faces when we talk about First Communion.  They are waiting in joyous anticipation to receive the most precious gift of Jesus in the Eucharist.  How wonderful!

First Communion is on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

Photography

Individual pictures will be taken in the Multi Purpose Room of the school.  The time schedule for the individual First Communion pictures is as follows:

Last names beginning with A-L will begin at 12:25 p.m.

Last names beginning with M- Z will begin at 12:50 p.m.

All children should meet in the gym for the First Communion Group photo at 1:15 p.m.

The Group Photo will be taken at 1:30 p.m.

Parents will complete their order form and give it to the staff of Love’s photography at the time the photo is taken.  Order forms were included in the parent packet and extra forms will be available on First Communion Day.  Professional photographers will be taking still and video photos during the mass. EVERYONE is asked to refrain from take pictures during the First Communion liturgy because this is distracting from the sacred celebration and sacrifice of the mass.

All Video Photography order forms should be returned to Mrs. Koppy before First Communion day.

The First Communion Liturgy will begin at 2:00 p.m.  At the conclusion of the liturgy, the First Communicants will process out of church and into the Lower Church.  Parents will meet their child in the Lower Church and pick up their child’s first Communion Certificate at that time.

Please contact Mrs. Donna Koppy at (314) 487-6520 ext. 2219 or koppyd@assumptionstl.org  for additional information.

Confirmation Reminders

Confirmation Practice

All candidates are expected to attend with his or her sponsor.  If a sponsor is unable to attend, a parent may attend in his or her place.  The practice for all Confirmation candidates and sponsors will take place on

Monday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. in church.  Practice was originally scheduled for 4/19/2010 and was changed from the original date that was published at the time of the parent meeting.  Please be aware that this change of schedule was published after we received our notice for our date of Confirmation from the Archbishop.  PSR students and their sponsors will meet in their classrooms at 6:15 p.m.  The practice will conclude by 7:30 p.m.

Confirmation Robes

Red gowns will be worn by all confirmands during the Confirmation liturgy.  The gowns will be given to all candidates at the Confirmation practice.  Please iron the gowns before the Confirmation liturgy.  Please be sure to follow the instructions below when pressing the gown.  All candidates will bring their robe with them on the night of Confirmation.  School students will hang their gowns on the coat rack located just outside the Parish Center, since they will be wearing their gown again for graduation.

All candidates should wear dress clothes under their gowns.  Boys are expected to wear a dress shirt, tie, dress pants, belt, and dress shoes and socks.  Girls should wear a dress, or skirt and top, and dress shoes that are appropriate for a special occasion, taking care that necklines and hem lines are modest and do are not revealing.

Care and Ironing Instructions for Confirmation Gowns

Do not wash your Confirmation gown; they are not washable.  Care must be taken when ironing.  Gowns must be ironed using the low setting only.  If the iron is too hot, the material will disintegrate.  In the past years, some parents have taken their child’s gown to the cleaners for pressing.

The Celebration of Confirmation

The Confirmation liturgy will take place on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.  Candidates and sponsors will meet in the Church Lower Level at 6:30 p.m.  Pews will be reserved in church for the confirmands and sponsors.   Family and friends may sit in the pews that are not reserved.   Should any guest need handicapped seating, parents are asked to please notify Donna Koppy as soon as possible so the appropriate arrangements may be made in advance.

Confirmation Reception

Everyone is invited to attend the reception in the Parish Center immediately following the liturgy.

Sacramental News

We are joyfully anticipating the celebration of the Sacraments of Confirmation on Friday, April 30, 2010.  Our eighth graders attended a retreat with their sponsors in March that was led by the REAP TEAM.  They participated in various service projects throughout the past year as members of their Confirmation Community Groups.  We thank all the adults who have served as leaders this year.

Mercy Center

Confirmation Sponsors and Candidates attend mass at the Mercy Center.

Agape Day

Our second graders will gather for a morning of prayerful preparation that we call Agape Day on Saturday, April 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  They are looking forward to receiving Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time on May 2, 2010.

Keep Us in Prayer

We ask all parishioners to keep our Confirmands and second graders in their prayers by becoming a prayer partner.  This is simple.  Select a prayer card from the basket next to the photo displays in church this weekend and then pray for the child whose name is on the card.  Your prayers are a wonderful way to share our faith with our children.

Coming Soon–PSR Registration for the 2010–2011 School Year

Registration will begin the week of April 26th. We are doing something new this year: registration via email.  Registering in this manner will be easier and more convenient for parents while reducing costs.  If you know that your email address has changed or you did not provide an email address on last year’s registration, please email Mr. Matt Schoen at

with your current email address.  We ask parents to be on the lookout for their PSR registration email.

Blessing for Valentine’s Day

 Good and loving God,

May we remember to show our love through acts of kindness always.

Your love for us knows no limits. May we learn to share your love with others.  Amen

PSR St. Vincent De Paul Food Drive

There is a saying hunger knows no season and for that reason the PSR community is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the Assumption Parish St. Vincent De Paul Society food pantry.  Recent fluctuations in the economy have contributed to an increase in the number of people needing assistance.  Donations of non-perishable food items, such as soups, stews, pasta, sauces, canned goods, and boxed dry goods help make possible the fine work of the St. Vincent De Paul Society.  We will be collecting non-perishable food items throughout the month of February. Just look for the collection box at the front lobby of the school.

Welcome Back to a Returning PSR Staff Member

We welcome Mr. Anthony Gerber back to the PSR Staff.  Mr. Gerber has a Masters degree in religious education and is completing his final course work at Kenrick Glennon Seminary.  He will be ordained to the transitional deaconate in March.  Mr. Gerber taught fourth, fifth, and seventh grade in the PSR Program when he was an undergraduate at Washington University.  He is teaching eighth grade this year.

Anthony Gerber, 8th Grade

Welcome back Mr. Gerber!

Children’s Choir

All children in grades 3-8 are invited to join the Assumption Children’s Choir.  The Assumption Children’s Choir practices on the last Wednesday of the month and sings at the 10:30 a.m. mass on the last Sunday of the month.

If you would like more information, please call Mrs. Mary Meyer at (314) 984-0847 or our parish Music Minister, Mrs. Nancy Pyle, at (314) 487-7970 ext. 1220.

Lenten Observances

The liturgical season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2010.  This is a time for traditional catholic practices of prayer, fasting, and abstinence.  During Lent, PSR and school students will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and pray the Stations of the Cross. The Signs of Lent, which incorporates scripture readings and liturgical symbols as part of the prayers, will be the theme for our all-school prayer at the beginning of every PSR session.

First Communion Parent Meeting

Our second grade students are looking forward to receiving for their First Holy Communion in the spring.  Parents play a vital role in the preparation process.  All second grade parents will gather together in the Church Lower Level meeting area on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Please contact Mrs. Donna Koppy at (314) 487-6520 ext. 2219 or koppyd@assumptionstl.org for additional information.

December News:

Dear Parents and Candidates,

It is my honor to announce that we have received official notification from the Archbishop’s office today regarding the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation at Assumption Parish.  The official news is that Archbishop Carlson will come to Assumption Parish on Friday, April 30, 2010, to celebrate this sacrament.  The liturgy will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Sponsors and candidates should go to the lower church at 6:30 p.m.  There will be a reception for candidates, sponsors, and their families in the Parish Center immediately following the conclusion of the liturgy.

We look forward to celebrating this holy and sacred occasion with you.

Mrs. Donna Koppy
Director of Faith Formation for Children
Assumption Catholic Church

Good and Gracious God,

The living green on this wreath is a symbol of Your gift of life to us.  Circles have no beginning and no ending—just like Your love for us.  As Christmas approaches, the candles we light will glow with the life of your Your love.  God, we ask your blessing upon this Advent wreath.  May the Advent prayers we say help us to prepare for your birth at Christmas.

Amen

Sponsor a Family at Christmas

The PSR community will help three needy families in the St. Louis Area have a Merry Christmas this year.  In addition to the items specified on our list, we will be collecting toiletries as well (for example, tooth brushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, toilet paper, famine sanitary supplies).  Students are to bring the wrapped gifts and unwrapped toiletries to PSR class on December 7, 2009.

New Communication Information

Assumption PSR will be using the School Reach System this year to enhance our ability to communicate with all PSR families.  The new system will send important messages to all PSR families who provided correct and current email addresses and phone numbers at the time of registration.  All PSR families should have received an automated phone reminder Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. about Parent/Teacher conferences.  If you did not receive this reminder call, please email schoenm@assumptionstl.org and provide us with your current home phone number for verification.

In case of class cancelation due to inclement weather, announcements will be made on KMOX 1120 AM radio, KMOV Channel 4 T.V., and KSDK News Channel 5 T.V.  In addition, PSR families will be notified via the School Reach phone system if time allows.

Another new way we are enhancing communication, is by providing all PSR catechists with email.  Feel free to contact your child’s teacher directly with any questions or concerns you may have.

Advent

On Sunday November, 29, 2009, the Church around the world begins a new year.  Advent is a time of joyous preparation of our hearts for the birth of Jesus Christ and his coming again at the end of time.  During this time of preparation, PSR classes will include traditional observances.  Advent wreaths and prayer chains help us to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus.  Children will have the opportunity to receive the gift of forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Kids Helping Kids—Coins for Candy

Thank you to all our students who contributed to our annual Kids Helping Kids Coins for Candy Halloween Collection.  Judging from the results of the collection, the children were successful in filling their trick or treat bags.  We raised a total of $74.53, which we will donate to the Assumption St. Vincent De Paul Society.

November News:

Kids Helping Kids, Coins for Candy

Calling all children!  Don’t forget to count the candy in your trick or treat bag and donate a penny for every piece of candy to our Coins for Candy Collection.  We will donate our pennies to Assumption St. Vincent De Paul Society.  Please place your donation in the SVDP collection container by the school office.  We will be collecting donations on Monday, November 2nd and Monday, November 9th.

November 2—All Souls

All Souls Day is rooted in the ancient Christian tradition of remembering and praying for all the faithful departed.  PSR students and staff will be saying special prayers during the month of November for all those who have gone before us.

We remember our relatives and friends who have died:

Prayer for All Souls

Eternal rest grant unto them, O’ Lord

And let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace.  Amen.

May their soul and all the souls of

All the faithful departed,

Through the mercy of God,

Rest in peace.  Amen.

October News:

Honoring the Blessed Mother

During the month of October, we honor our Blessed Mother by praying the rosary.  Catholic tradition tells us Mary encouraged praying the rosary in her apparitions at Lourdes when she appeared to Saint Bernadette.  Mary encouraged the three children who saw her to pray the rosary for peace.  Students will have the opportunity to learn more about this beautiful prayer.  The rosary teaches us about the life of Jesus when we pray the various mysteries of the rosary—the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous Mysteries.

PSR Mass

The PSR community will attend mass on Monday, October 19, 2009.  Students will go to their classroom at 6:15 p.m.  Mass will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Parents are encouraged to attend mass and may sit with their child’s class in church.  All students will be dismissed from their classroom.

Confirmation News

The eighth grade students in our parish will be preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the spring of 2010.  Grade eight parents—please mark your calendars: The Confirmation parent meeting will be on October 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Church.  Parents are expected to attend this meeting.  Please contact Mrs. Donna Koppy at 314-487-6520 ext. 2219 for additional information.

Safe Touch

The Safe Touch program is designed to teach personal safety to our children.  Mrs. Nina Foshe is the Assumption Parish Safe Touch Facilitator.  She will be presenting safety information to our PSR classes through the month of October.  A letter outlining the Safe Touch program was sent home to all parents in September.  To learn more about the Safe Touch program, please call Mrs. Donna Koppy at 314-487-6520 ext. 2219.

Assumption Youth Choir

Children in Grades 3-8 are invited to join the Assumption Parish Youth Choir.  The choir sings at the 10:30 a.m. mass on the last Sunday of the month.  Please contact Mrs. Nancy Pyle or Mary Glynn Meyer for more information.

 Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

All PSR students, parents, and staff are required to enter and exit the school building through the front entrance  or the cafeteria doors.  The PSR is not allowed to use the gym/Parish Center doors.

Each year at the end of September and the beginning of October, we remember the holy angels, the great archangels, and our guardian angels.  Angels are mentioned nearly 300 times in the Bible.

During every mass, when we join with all the angels and saints in their song of praise, I know my guardian angel is singing with me: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord!”  And, when my days are over, I know that “the angels will lead me into paradise.”  Psalm 91 assures us that God gave his angels charge over us to protect us in all of our ways.  “They shall lift you up with their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”  They protect us, minister to us, challenge us, make God’s will know to us, pray with us, and lead us home to God.  When is the last time you recognized this very special creation and gift from God?

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

to whom God’s love commits me here,

ever this day be at my side,

to light and guard, to rule and guide.

                              Amen

New PSR Catechists

Assumption parish is fortunate to have generous faith-filled parishioners who volunteer to serve as catechists in our PSR Program.  Some members of our staff have taught for a number of years, and we are grateful for their service and dedication to sharing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with the children of this parish.  The Assumption PSR staff is dedicated to providing a quality religious education and formation program.  We have three new catechists joining the PSR Staff this year:

Mrs. Corie McKean has joined the PSR Staff as a third grade catechist.  Mrs. McKean has experience as a teacher with a BA in elementary education as well as an M. A. in Early Childhood Education.  She has worked with Camp Assumption.

Mr. Patrick Prindiville and Mrs. Erin Prindiville will be serving as our new catechists in grade five.  They both have a background working in various educational settings as well as Camp Assumption and AYM.

But for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you have learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.  All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
